The Unwritten Road

An Offbeat Exploration of Sri Lanka

13-Day Tour
from $5990
Next Scheduled Departure

overview

A candid journey shaped by light, rhythm, and human stories, from the island’s iconic sites to its lesser-visited regions.

From windswept fishing coasts to mist-covered tea hills, from rice paddies in the East to the quiet streets of Jaffna, this 13-day journey captures Sri Lanka in its most intimate form. We avoid the tourist circuits and go where life unfolds with sincerity.

As we journey across the island, we meet the Sinhalese in the hills and central regions, Muslim communities in the remote East, and Tamil families in the far North. Each cultural thread brings its own rhythm, rituals and relationship with light — offering a rich, multi-layered human landscape.

We travel across the island to meet those who live by rhythm and ritual. Tea pickers at dawn, brickmakers under smoky light, barefoot farmers in muddy fields, saffron-robed devotees at dusk. The itinerary is designed for photographers who seek light, instinct, and connection, not setups or performances.

Each day brings new textures and new human encounters. From market chaos to rural quiet, from first light over the Indian Ocean to glowing Vesak lanterns, we move with purpose but without rush. This is a candid, immersive experience guided by light, presence, and everyday beauty.

We wrap the morning with chai and street portraits at a small village tea house.

Afternoon

Arriving in Colombo, we explore a softer side of the capital. If time allows, we shoot along the Galle Face seafront or the old quarters of Slave Island as the city winds down into Vesak night. Lanterns, families, and quiet celebration close the day.

TESTIMONIALS

What Our Guests Say.

Our tours are more than just photography trips—they’re immersive journeys filled with authentic encounters, meaningful connections, and unforgettable experiences. Participants leave with more than just incredible images; they gain new perspectives and lasting memories. Here is a sample of what past participants have to say about their experience with us.

Simply the best photo tour guide imaginable

I have been on three photo tours with Arnaud and am signed up for my fourth. Starting with a 4 hour tour of Cholon in Saigon, a full 3 week tour of Vietnam, a 17 day tour of Sri Lanka…

Arnaud is organized, passionate, compassionate, committed and obsessed with ensuring that everyone develops their photographic ability, no matter where you are on your photographic journey.

Did I mention that he is also charming? He is delightful to watch interacting with locals, and keeps the conversation going between shoots. He loves to teach. Before the shoot he sets you up, during the shoot he checks up on you to make sure things are going well, he reviews your shoots afterward with great feedback.

If you love photography, and you love travel, I can’t recommend a tour with Arnaud highly enough.

Judy U. – Canada

An unforgettable 5-day photography journey in Central Vietnam.

Joining Arnaud’s photography workshop in Central Vietnam was, without a doubt, one of the most enriching and memorable experiences I’ve ever had. From start to finish, everything was masterfully curated – not only in terms of photography, but in every detail of the journey itself.

Arnaud’s dedication, passion, and deep knowledge shine through in every moment. The locations we visited were far from touristic areas and authentic, often at just the right time for magical light and genuine local interactions. It’s clear that this experience is the result of years of refining, planning, and building meaningful connections with communities. Nothing felt forced – it all unfolded with a natural rhythm that allowed us to be fully present and creative.

Every day started before dawn – waking up for sunrise shoots became second nature. We photographed fishermen returning from a night at sea, wandered through muddy lagoons, documented the vibrant chaos of a beachside fish market, photographed the workers on luscious green paddy fields, immersed ourselves in the colors and energy of local food markets. These weren’t staged or touristic encounters – they were real, grounded in daily life, and beautifully human.

Arnaud has a gift for teaching – sharing his knowledge with clarity, patience, and a great sense of humor. He motivated us to rise at 3:30 a.m. with a smile, and somehow made it feel completely worth it. He also took the time to review my photos and shared valuable tips and insights.

One of the most beautiful aspects of this workshop is the human connection. Arnaud fosters a sense of camaraderie that goes beyond photography.

This wasn’t just a workshop – it was a journey filled with creativity, laughter, inspiration, and a genuine connection to Vietnam’s people, landscapes, and rhythms of life. I leave not only with better technical skills and a fresh perspective on photography, but also with a heart full of gratitude.

If you’re even slightly considering this experience – go for it. It’s truly one of a kind.

Thank you Arnaud,
~Justyna

  • 90 to 60 days before departure: 50% of the total trip cost will be forfeited.
  • 60 days or fewer before departure: 100% of the total trip cost will be forfeited.

Cancellation fees and forfeited deposits are non-transferable. In some cases, a portion of the lost deposit may be applied toward another trip—contact us for details.

Travel Insurance

VPA strongly recommends all participants carry comprehensive travel insurance covering:

  • Non-refundable trip payments due to cancellation
  • Unused airline tickets or other travel-related expenses
  • Medical coverage, including emergency care, hospital or doctor visits, prescriptions, etc.

Participants are solely responsible for ensuring their health, dental, and travel insurance provides adequate coverage for the destinations visited. VPA does not provide or reimburse these services.

International Travel

Each participant must have a valid passport that does not expire within 6 months of the trip’s end date, and all required visas.

Please arrange these documents well in advance of departure.

Itinerary Changes and Delays

VPA will adhere to the published itinerary as closely as possible. However, circumstances outside our control may cause changes. These may include:

  • Weather conditions
